Today, I'm performing "Only the Good Die Young" from Billy Joel's 1977 album, The Stranger. This song was a single from the album and it charted at #24 on the Billboard Hot 100. This song was originally recorded in a reggae style. You can hear that in the demo version of this song on the My Lives box set. It had a totally different time signature and groove to it. When they played it through, Liberty DeVitto (Billy's drummer at the time) said that he hated reggae music and told Billy that "the closest you've been to Jamaica is Queens." Liberty then played it as a Hendrix-style shuffle. It clearly worked out for the better! Billy has played this song in concert a lot over the years. Almost all the later live versions of this song are superior to the studio recording because of the horn arrangement in the chorus. It is absolutely phenomenal to hear live. In late 1998, Billy dropped the key of this song a half step to E, and then another half step (which would make it a full step down from the original recording) to Eb in 2006. I actually find Eb suits this song better than the original key of F. My version is inspired by how Billy has played the song from 2006 to the present. Enjoy! Patreon:   / kyle_c
