I recently circulated a video following my recent appearance on BBC Morning live, which featured the story of my father and the access issues he faced getting access to optical health care. Within the programme a presenter read out part of a statement from the Association of Optometrists stating that it would be a reasonable adjustment for an optician to ask a Deaf patient to bring a friend or family member with them to interpret. I disagreed with this statement and did not feel it fit with the intention of the programme so contacted the Association of Optometrists and the subsequent conversations highlighted that their full statement was not read out and they are in support of the Deaf community getting access to optical services via a qualified interpreter. I have translated their statement in full.
