For much of its history the traditional racing board game has dominated European board game design. That's a lot of time, since it's been around since the 15th Century and was still being used well into the 20th. In all that time it's barely changed, with largely cosmetic updates retheming it as anything you can imagine while masking the fact that it's a terrible example of board game design. Perhaps because of this, the traditional racing board game is today a genre of board game that's typically left well alone. But every so often a game comes along that shows there are still interesting things you can do with it.
