Hey whatsup guys OSG back with another episode of The Commodore 64 Years. In this episode we’re counting down the 20 best Commodore 64 games of 1988 — one of the strongest late-era years in C64 history. Even with 16-bit systems on the rise, developers were still squeezing incredible performance out of the SID chip and 8-bit hardware. 1988 delivered serious depth and variety. We’re talking genre-defining RPGs like Wasteland and Ultima V, classic adventure design from Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders, hardcore strategy from Pool of Radiance, and arcade perfection with MicroProse Soccer and Katakis. And of course… Last Ninja 2: Back with a Vengeance — a game I’ve said many times is one of the greatest complete gaming experiences I’ve ever finished. Atmosphere, music, challenge, presentation — it’s the total package. As always, this is a ranked countdown based on critical reception, legacy, technical achievement, and how these games are remembered today — not just personal nostalgia. If you love retro gaming, Commodore 64 history, and classic 8-bit deep dives, make sure to like, subscribe, and let me know in the comments: 👉 What was your favourite C64 game of 1988? 👉 Did I miss anything that should’ve made the list? 👉 Where does Last Ninja 2 rank for you?
