Keane Wonder Mine and Ghost Town | Death Valley National Park, California | Visit https://lasvegasareatrails.com/keane-... This video traces the pathway up 1000 vertical feet in the funeral mountain range between the lower and upper stamp mill of Keane Wonder Mine. When I reached the upper area, I thought it might be a half-way point, so I continued along a very sketchy path up the canyon toward the summit of the Funeral Mountain Range only to eventually be stopped by a box canyon ending with 500ft vertical cliff walls in all advancing directions. I did make some interesting discoveries in the canyon above the upper mining area which are seen in the video. Returning to the upper stamp mill and exploring the area more fully I realized it was indeed the upper extent of the Keane Wonder Mine, the tramway and the trail. By way of history, Keane Wonder Mine in Death Valley, California was part of the early 1900’s gold rush in the Death Valley area. In 1904 two prospectors, Jack Keane and Domingo Etcharren discovered gold in the funeral mountains area on the East side of Death Valley. They staked their claims there and went looking for an investor. After their first investor pulled out John Campbell and Homer Wilson from San Francisco invested in the Keane Wonder mining operation in 1906. A unique and powerful mining infrastructure was set up that resulted in the Keane Wonder mine becoming the longest profitable operating mine in the Death Valley region. The infrastructure included an upper and lower stamp mill to process the gold ore with an aerial tramway to transport the ore from the upper stamp mill 1000ft vertically down a canyon in the funeral mountain range to the lower stamp mill for final processing. The 50 or more mines were above along with a miner’s camp. There was a small town with a store and post office below. With this powerful mining infrastructure, the Keane Wonder Mine operation, at full capacity in 1907 produced as much as 700 tons of ore each day, grossing over $1,000,000. The Tonopah and Tidewater Railway built a spur to the Keane Wonder Mine in 1907 and the peak population was around 100. In 1912 output was diminishing and the post office was closed in 1914. In 1916 the Keane Wonder Mine closed, but some mining operations continued until 1942. In 1916 Jack Keane built a store in the town of Darwin before eventually returning to his homeland, Ireland, where he was imprisoned for 17 years on a murder charge. In 1984 a tourist fell into a vertical open mine shaft and died. Thereafter 50 mine openings in the area were closed off. Between 2008 and 2017 the entire area was closed to tourists while the poisonous chemicals including mercury and cyanide were cleaned up. Keane Wonder Mine opened again in 2017 and visitors can hike a steep but stable trail along the tramway from the lower stamp mill to the upper stamp mill and mining area. Along the way there are spectacular views of Death Valley and the Panamint Mountain Range, best during the morning hours.
