Located at Mile Marker #50 on Haneo’o Road, just a short drive past Hana Town, Hamoa Beach remains one of Hana’s best kept secrets, with frequent days of plentiful sunshine, surf and more than enough room to spread out on the salt-and-pepper colored sand. Take fresh fruit and picnic supplies to enjoy in the shade of a nearby Hala tree, and enjoy onsite amenities like public showers, restrooms and a handy foot washing station. Keep in mind that there is a steep decline on the path down to the beach (and a steep journey back up), and there are no lifeguards on duty at this particular beach location. Always remember to be safe and stick to the sand on days when conditions are rough or intense, as they sometimes can be during winter months. Meaning ‘abundance’ in Hawaiian, Hamoa Beach consists of a mix of black lava rock and white coral sand, and remains surrounded by lush greenery and stunning turquoise waves lapping the shoreline. With a convenient location near Travaasa Hana Resort and several other scenic Road to Hana stops, this makes for an excellent pit stop for those in need of a mid-drive swim, snack or nap before continuing on to further stops like Wailua Falls and ‘Ohe’o Gulch, also known as the Seven Sacred Pools. Be sure to store all valuables in a hidden location in your car, as the only available parking is street parking, and bring plenty of SPF and water to keep yourself cool and hydrated. While you’re likely to see a mixture of locals and residents on any given beach day, Hamoa’s remote location pretty much ensures you’ll never have to fight for space to swim or sunbathe.
