What to do in a hot summer night after enjoying the good food and shops in Osaka? Well, in my case it's been getting out of the hotel with the Panasonic Lumix S5 IIx with a fun lens mounted on it, a Helios 44M (it's a 58mm f2 vintage lens from the soviet era) modified to generate most of the effects of an anamorphic lens: horizontal lens flares and oval bokeh. I didn't have a plan but I guessed that the Shinsekai area of Osaka would be a good spot to test the lens that I acquired months ago but I didn't have the time to use it yet. Why? well, look at the video, it's full of lights! Unfortunately, it was not able to check the oval shaped bokeh, I couldn't find a subject that was at a right distance from spot lights... but at least I was able to get some lens flares, I would even say that it was too many flares! But, well, that was the point anyway, just to have some fun playing with a lens and try to get some sequences to showcase its character. You will notice that the focus is lost in some moments, that's me being bad at manual focusing (the lens is totally manual) but I would say that it adds to the vibe. Generally speaking, I wouldn't use this lens other than for fun projects like this, there are much better options out there, including some real anamorphic lenses but if you are not pretending to do a professional job, this lens might be for you. Also, it cost me like 100 euros from eBay :) The camera, as always, behaved amazingly. I don't think there is a better value right now for a hibrid camera than the Panasonic Lumix S5 IIx. Well, as always, happy to read your comments and feel free to ask any questions!
