Welcome to Burnley everybody. We begin proceedings in the East Lancashire district with a lovely village three miles West of the town. A decent size, at the United Kingdom Census 2011, it had a population of 1,979. It adjoins the fellow Burnley parishes of Dunnockshaw, Habergham Eaves and Padiham The name Hapton is thought to have been derived from the Old English words “heap” and “tūn” meaning “the enclosure on the hill”, and given the surroundings, I’d say that’s accurate. It’s thought to be the amalgamation of three medieval manors. The first was linked to a castle and subsequent village that would later develop near it. The second was Shuttleworth, and the third was called Birtwistle and its location is uncertain The present village is largely a product of the Industrial revolution. By the time of first Ordnance Survey map of the area, published in the 1840s, tram roads crossed Stone Moor to the North. They connected a wharf on the Leeds-Liverpool canal to the local collieries there. There was also a dye works, quarries and mills here and it soon became an industrial heartland In 1888, Walter and Joseph Simpson established an Electrical Engineering company called Simpson Bros. They specialised in the electrification of cotton mills and to promote the new business they installed three electric street lights, making it the first village in Britain with electric lighting. There are some incredibly informative information boards here. I found three in total, one at the South of the village, one on the canal and one near the recreation ground There’s loads more for such a small place relatively speaking. Come with me as I try to put Burnley on the map in the same way as everywhere else, despite not knowing much about it. This is HAPTON. **** My name is Andy. I am armed with a car, a GoPro and an unhealthy amount of time on my hands. Join me as I try to visit every single parish in the district of Burnley. There are 8.
