(9 Jun 1998) German/Russian/Nat Russian President Boris Yeltsin and German Chancellor Helmut Kohl in Bonn on Tuesday showed a united front in the face of Russian economic turmoil and continuing violence in Kosovo. Kohl said Yeltsin was prepared to use his big influence in Belgrade so that the bloodshed in Kosovo ends as quickly as possible. Although the statements delivered by the leaders were short on specifics, they said the consultations involving defence, finance, interior, economics and foreign ministers were a success. Yeltsin and Kohl spoke to journalists on Tuesday at the end of the Russian president's two day visit to Germany, during which he led a top-level delegation from his government. The German Chancellor was keen to enlist Yeltsin's support over economic sanctions against Serbia, a country with whom Russia has close historical ties. But Chancellor Kohl seemed confident in announcing Russia's backing for punitive measures against Serbia for their persecution of the ethnic Albanian population in Kosovo. SOUNDBITE: (German) "We are in agreement that everything must be done to bring about a stop to the bloodshed and that every kind of politics of violence should be stopped." SUPER CAPTION: Helmut Kohl, German Chancellor Germany has a good refugee record and in the past has taken in thousands of displaced people from Turkey and Bosnia. Kohl was worried that the inevitable flood of refugees from Kosovo fleeing the fighting, would end up in Germany, as so many of them already have. Without elaborating the German leader announced that Yeltsin would be using "his influence" in Belgrade with the Serbian President Milosevic. SOUNDBITE: (German) "The latest conflict raises the danger of more refugees coming out of the region, and that's one of the reasons, and I say this quite openly, we are so concerned about this because Germany already has 150,000 refugees from Kosovo, and Boris Yeltsin has also expressed his concern, and will use his influence in Belgrade to bring and end to the conflict." SUPER CAPTION: Helmut Kohl, German Chancellor President Yeltsin generally echoed the Chancellor's sentiments, but talked of the use of an external power influence to stem the crisis, and how disastrous that path would be. This was a round-about way of ruling out military intervention by NATO forces. SOUNDBITE: (Russian) "I share the concerns of the German people over the situation in Kosovo. Countries should understand clearly that we will work closely with Helmut Kohl and stay in contact. Germany was also concerned about a possible flood of refugees from the conflict. He said Germany had spent 15 billion marks ($8.5 billion) providing shelter and support for refugees from the Bosnia war. It is now a very dangerous hot spot in Europe, where tension is increasing. A power influence from outside will lead to the spread and escalation of the Kosovo conflict. We, with Chancellor Helmut Kohl, hold united positions on this issue. Together we have constant telephone contact about this and are monitoring it closely." SUPER CAPTION: Boris Yeltsin, Russian President" President Yeltsin later announced that he would be seeking a meeting with Serbian President Milosevic in the near future, in an attempt to end the escalating violence.
