His new project, “That Day, on the River”, newspaper clippings, historical photographs and a film about a female basketball player serve as the source material for an exploration of his father’s childhood in provincial China. The film  is held together by a conversation between he and his father originally recorded during the production of his animated feature, Silver Bird and Rainbow Fish. During the trip, his father talked with him about his childhood memories in the Fifties and things he wasn’t good at. Through his art, Lei Lei mixes individual and collective memory: the artist’s nostalgia serves as the starting point of a quest for truth regarding history, family, and personal identity. Which is more significant nowadays, the photograph as work of art or as archival image? Which is more important, the picture or the process of image production; the fact that an image is viewed or the context in which it is viewed? It is also a reflection on the image and the status of the author. 🇮🇹 L’ospite di questo episodio di HOBO è Lei Lei: artista di animazione sperimentale che, nel corso della sua carriera, ha lavorato con la video arte, la pittura, le installazioni museali, la musica e le performance VJ. Nel suo nuovo progetto, “That Day, on the River”, ritagli di giornale, fotografie e frammenti di film servono come materiale di partenza per un’esplorazione dell’infanzia di suo padre nella Cina provinciale. Il film è tenuto insieme da una conversazione tra lui e il suo genitore originariamente registrata durante la produzione del suo lungometraggio d’animazione, Silver Bird e Rainbow Fish. Durante il viaggio, suo padre gli racconta i propri ricordi d’infanzia e le cose in cui non è mai stato bravo. Lei Lei da tempo, con il suo cinema e con i suoi collage, mescola memoria individuale e collettiva utilizzando la nostalgia come motore primario di un’inchiesta sulla verità storica, famigliare e personale. Cosa è più rilevante, al giorno d’oggi, la fotografia come opera o come “found object”? Un’immagine può essere considerata indipendentemente dal processo con la quale è stata realizzata o dalla “fonte” dalla quale proviene?
