Hi I’m Paul Swartwood, and I’m the owner of a little Glassblowing studio in Maryland called Glen Echo Glassworks. Since 2009, I've worked with my friend Mark Hill on his designs in hot glass. Mark has a true affection for the designs of mid century modern artists. Especially the limited design glass that was made in the glass factories in Sweden. The mid century modern era was a birth for creativity in glass in a lot of areas of the world From Italian glass designers working with factories like Seguso, Venini, and Nason The depth and design created in the thick layers of glass is incredible. The way that the geometric patterns, bubbles, and overlapping transparent colors create an amazing design that changes and looks different at every turn. The Swedes took the early techniques of carving and cutting to a new level, by sandblasting geometric patterns and figural images deep into a blank, or parison, then reheating and picking it back up to overlay and trap the form and bubbles into the glass. And they weren’t done then! Many times, they went back into the furnace to take another gathering of clear glass to really encase each beautiful design into a thick wall of crystal clear glass. My favorites of these techniques developed were named: Graal, Ariel, Kraka, and Ravenna See the rest of Mark work at sommerso.com #artglass #sweden #modernliving
