Hi everyone! My name is Dan, and I am a veterinarian. Today I am talking about apoquel. I cover what apoquel is used for in the dog and if it may be a good idea for your dog. Of course, you should always talk with your veterinarian before starting any new medication like apoquel. Apoquel is used to treat allergies in dogs. As a veterinarian I use apoquel on a regular basis and I have found it to work really well. Of course, every dog is different with how they respond to a medication. Apoquel blocks the j kinase pathway in the dog. This is one of the pathways that lets to itchy skin from allergies. When apoquel blocks this pathway that causes allergies the dog is really not itchy anymore. Most pet parents will start at twice a day dosing and then reduce to only once a day long term. The most common adverse effect of apoquel is an upset stomach like vomiting. If you are every worried about an adverse effect from any medications, please consult your veterinarian.
