Across Tanzania’s Kongwa District, farmers are fighting a silent threat. Invasive plant species, once ignored, are now taking over farmlands, depleting nutrients, and threatening food security. What began as a localised ecological challenge is quickly becoming a national agricultural concern. According to the 2022-2023 Government Environmental Conservation Master Plan, Tanzania is home to 220 invasive species, 75 of which have been identified as harmful to the environment and biodiversity. In this Science Wednesday, we engage in an in-depth conversation with the journalist and scientist behind the story “Invasive Plants Threaten Agriculture in Kongwa District,” as they unpack how invasive weeds are spreading, their impact on yields and livelihoods, and the urgent measures needed to protect Tanzania’s food systems.
