This is a clip from Capitalism Hits Home: Kristen Ghodsee on the Decommodification of Sex - Part 2 in which Dr. Fraad and Prof. Forlano continue their conversation with author and Professor Kristen Ghodsee about the interdependence of women's sexual relationships, fertility and motherhood to their economic independence. "I think that what happened in a lot of these East / West debates about the status of women in society is that the socialist women insisted that capitalism was the primary problem and Western women often insisted that patriarchy was the problem. And because of this tension, fueled by the Cold War, socialists often get blamed for not appropriately dealing with patriarchy, in the same way that Western women get blamed for not dealing with the larger social economic and political structures of society. And I think that's a long-standing debate that goes all the way back to the 19th century between the socialist and bourgeoisie feminists. And I don't think it's an easy one to solve, but I think it's really important for people to know that there's this entire history of a different kind of women's activism that sees men as allies and not necessarily just lazy louts who aren't picking up, doing their share of the work in the home. I think it's really important to say that capitalism puts an incredible amount of pressure on men too, and if we lived in a more equitable society with wider and healthier social safety nets, it's not just women that would benefit, everybody would benefit."
