Manzanar - I've read about it, drove past it, been curious about it. And yet, until now, I've never made the effort to explore it and the surrounding area. It's a fascinating piece of history, perhaps a historical footnote in America's involvement in World War II, insofar as the country's dealings with regard to relocating it's own citizens. I say that not as a judgement, but perhaps as a reflection of our wartime disposition regarding our perceived assimilation of a multi-cultural society. It's a footnote, indeed, and a curious one. But I wasn't here to ponder societal leanings, and was instead simply exploring and walking the grounds of yet another historical site with a great deal of historical context and dynamics. I'm a history nerd, and these sites are irresistible to me. Stepping outside the historical context, we find Manzanar in a beautiful and unique environment, within the rain-shadow of California's Sierra Nevada mountain range. And then there's the Owens River Valley, with the river's historical significance within the valley and, later, its diversion to serve the growing population of Los Angeles in Southern California. We explore this impact on the farmers in Owens Valley and, more specifically, the significance of the Owens River diversion upon the farming town of Manzanar, predating the internment camp upon which it received its name. The town site is scarcely noticeable, and yet we find just enough evidence of it's existence to pique our interest. So as always, thank you for joining us as we visit the internment camp of Manzanar, and the town which preceded it. #manzanar #internment #camp #wwiihistory #highway395
