Solo in the High Sierra - 5 days and 40 miles over Piute Pass to Merriam Lake

The thunderstorms were not in the forecast! Come Prepared! Someone suggested that they were a result of the heat wave we were experiencing at the time. Makes sense considering all the changes happening with the climate. This trip was done in mid July, 2024. And the mosquitoes were still in full force! Usually by mid July they die down, but not this year. I assume due to the heat wave, once again. Which meant more snow melt, more precipitation, and therefore more water everywhere. Skeeter heaven! I was testing a new Scarp 1 tent from Tarptent. It’s a four season tent and definitely overkill for this time of year in the Sierra. I wanted to get used to pitching it and sleeping in it before my trip to Iceland, (see my video “Laugavegur Solo”) so that I wouldn’t be fumbling around with the tent in the case of high wind or rain. It’s a fantastic tent, very roomy for one, and bombproof when set up properly. I think Tarptent makes the best tents. Like many trips, this one did not go as expected. No one likes having to turn around because they feel sick, but it’s just part of the adventure. And always better to be safe than sorry. My purpose is mostly to enjoy the aesthetic beauty of the mountains and to film and photograph the incredible landscape. I'm absolutely dying to see Bear Lakes Basin!
