“Ach Gott, wie manches Herzeleid” by J. S. Bach/J. Brahms/F. Jacob. The piece is played twice : once (0:00) with explanations, a second time (2:40) with a scroll-score. Carl Georg Peter Grädener (1812 - 1883) was a cellist, composer and friend of Johannes Brahms (1833 - 1897). Probably at Grädener's request, Brahms composed a middle voice to complete a chorale from J. S. Bach's cantata 44. Grädener used this piece to illustrate the paragraph "arpeggio writing" at the end of his harmony treatise « System der Harmonielehre," published in Hamburg in 1877. Even if it is not presented as an organ piece in this treatise, could this work be considered as Brahms' twelfth chorale for organ? The fact that all its various elements resemble those found in his 11 Chorales, Opus 122, legitimizes this thesis: its length, quality and conciseness, its instrumental and musical compatibility with the organ and its peaceful atmosphere and chromaticism that depict the text’s desolation, tribulations and sadness which lead one to heaven. After Francis Jacob discovered this piece, he recorded it, along with other organ chorales by various composers, on the organ at the St. Martin’s Church in Groningen (Netherlands), in conjunction with J. S. Bach’s 56 Choral Cantatas interpreted by the Gli Angeli Geneva Ensemble, conducted by Stephan MacLeod. Registration : Hoofdwerk (sixteens): Salicet 8’, Quintadena 8’, Gedekt 8’ ; Bovenwerk (added accompaniement) : Holfluit 8’ ; HW+BW ; Rugpositief (choral, doubled an octave lower): Quintadena 16’, Praestant 8’, Bourdon 8’, Roerfluit 8’, Octaaf 4’, Speelfluit 4’, Tremulant RP ; Pedaal : Praestant 16’, Subbas 16’, Octaaf 8’, Gedekt 8’.
