▬ Craniovertebral Joints ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ Welcome to the enchanting world of Craniovertebral Joints, where the skull and the vertebral column come together to create an intricate network of connections, allowing us to move our head with grace and precision. The Craniovertebral Joints consist of two main articulations: 👉 Atlanto-occipital Joint: This joint forms between the base of the skull (occipital bone) and the first cervical vertebra (atlas or C1). It is a synovial joint that permits flexion and extension of the head, allowing us to nod up and down. This movement is crucial for activities like looking up and down, as well as for nodding in response to various stimuli. 👉 Atlantoaxial Joint: The atlantoaxial joint forms between the atlas (C1) and the second cervical vertebra (axis or C2). This unique joint allows rotational movements of the head, enabling us to turn our head from side to side. It's this joint that lets us say a decisive "no" or nod our heads in agreement. The atlantoaxial joint is a pivot joint with a prominent bony process known as the odontoid process (dens) of the axis, which fits into a space in the atlas. This arrangement provides stability while allowing essential movements.
