갱년기 증상 완화 '유산균' 세계 최초 발견 For the first time ever, a local research team in Korea has identified a specific lactic acid bacteria that alleviates the symptoms of menopause. It's the same kind of bacteria found in yogurt and the Korean soybean paste cheonggukjang. Both foods are rich in probiotics, which are already known as being beneficial for the digestive system. Park Se-young has the details. Menopausal symptoms usually start appearing in women who are in their mid-40s. Around 75 percent of menopausal women experience hot flashes, depression and memory lapses, and these symptoms are usually treated through hormone therapy. Now, a Korean research team has identified a specific probiotic that could alleviate the symptoms and open up new treatment options. While analyzing the microorganisms in the intestines of menopausal mice and a control group, the researchers noticed that a lactic acid bacteria called YT1 nearly disappeared in the mouse model for menopause. They injected the mice with the bacteria over about four months and symptoms like short-term memory loss and bone density returned to normal levels. "Bone density was reduced by about ten percent in the mouse menopause models. We tested the effectiveness of YT1 in alleviating the symptoms." The researchers say they are the first in the world to identify the effects of the specific lactic acid bacteria on alleviating menopausal symptoms. After putting the finishing touches on a patent application and technology transfer, the researchers will seek to develop functional health foods based on their findings. Park Se-young, Arirang News.
