Kuchipudi dance tells the universal story with mime, expression, body movements and footwork patterns. It is a unique style amongst the classical dances of India. This part 2 of a Series on 'Introduction to Kuchipudi' explaining the salient features of Kuchipudi Dance. I represent the style of my family @Raja Radha Reddy and their gurus from the traditional Kucipudi family of Eluru late Vedantam Prahlada Sarma. Born in 1923 at Kuchipudi village, Andhra Pradesh, Shri Vedantam Prahlada Sarma inherited the art of dance as a family tradition. He was trained in Kuchipudi dance by his father Shri Vedantam Rattayya Sanna and other eminent Gurus like Shri Vedantam Lakshminara- yana Sastry and Shri Vempati Venkatanarayana. He acquired a deep knowledge of the music and dance of Kuchipudi and mastered both male and female roles as traditionally prescribed, performing to acclaim in the country and abroad. Over the last four decades Shri Sarma has dedicated him- self to the teaching of Kuchipudi, emerging as a father figure for the family of Kuchipudi dancers after the departure of the old masters. He has had a large number of disciples some of whom are notable performers today — among them his younger brother Shri Vedantam Satyanarayan Sarma. Shri Prahlada Sarma now heads the Kalakshetram at Eluru, a premier Kuchipudi institution. For his eminence in the field of Dance and his contribution to its enrichment, Shri Vedantam Prahlada Sarma receives the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award for Kuchipudi for 1985. Born in 1939 and 1950, Raja Radha Reddy, luminary Kuchipudi Dance duo are one of the most eminent disciples of Shri Prahlada Sarma and are recipients of the India's highest civilian awards Padma Bhushan and Padma Shree. www.rajaradhareddy.com I am proud to represent this lineage, lucky to be blessed with a dancing family and also to have performed all around the world since the tender age of 5. www.bhavanareddy.com
