Renting an Apartment in Dari Financial Literacy This is a community education video in language by Catholic Charities Milwaukee. Moving and looking for a new place to live can be stressful! Today we will talk about Renting an Apartment. We will share general tips for finding an apartment and other things you need to know. Importance Affordable apartments and homes in Milwaukee and other big cities are in high demand. It can be hard to find an apartment that is in your price range and that meets all of your families’ needs. We will share tips to help you think about your options and start searching. Process The process may differ at times, but here are general steps for finding a new place to rent. Start searching 1-3 months before you need to move. You will need to notify your landlord if you do not plan to continue your lease. Schedule appointments to see apartments and visit them. Ask questions about rent, other costs included or not included in the lease agreement. Complete a rental application. Once approved, you will sign a lease. This is a legal document promising you will pay a certain amount of money each month, usually for 1 year. Most landlords require a deposit & 1st month of rent paid in advance. Things to Consider Think about what is most important to you in your new apartment or home. This might be: Cost- Consider ALL of your bills, cost of utilities, future expenses, and budget. How much can you afford to pay for rent each month? Set a price range to help you search. Distance- Where is the best location based on where you work, shop, and spend time? Think about your commute if you ride the bus, drive to work, or drop kids off at school. Space- How many people will live with you? Other Factors- What else is important? Some people want a less busy street for kids or a park nearby. Helpful Tips Talk to your friends and coworkers. Ask them questions like: Where do you live and how is the rent cost? What do you like about your neighborhood? Where would you recommend looking for an apartment? Do you know of any people/places that are renting? Where to Look Ask friends, family, & co workers if they know of any apartments for rent. Identify neighborhoods you want to live in. Walk/drive around to find signs that say “For Rent” with a phone number to call. There are various websites where people post places for rent: Apartments.com, Craigslist, Zillow, and Trulia. Be sure to set your price range & date available when you search. Schedule an appointment Call, text, or email to set up an appointment to see the apartment or home. Ask a friend or family member for help if you need an interpreter. Apartments and homes for rent go quickly since a lot of people are searching. Stay positive, persistent, and committed! Questions As you look at an apartment/home for rent, remember what is important to you. Ask questions, take notes to help you remember, or ask to take photos. Ask the landlord: Do the toilets, showers, sinks, and AC/heat units work? What other things should I know about? What are the next steps if I want to rent this apartment? Do I need to complete an application or share references? ______________________________________________________________________ Thank you to our sources who provided information for this video.
