July 30, 1976 Grossmont College Economics Professor was his day job, but riding roller coasters was his passion. CBS 8’s Shirley Clum said Larry Smith probably rode more roller coasters than anyone else in the country. On this day he brought his son Steve along for the ride on the Giant Dipper at Belmont Park. He wore a microphone and explained what’s happening. “That was the first dip and now we’re up and around…Steve is loving it!” Clum opts for a kiddie ride for amusement. The coaster closed shortly after this in December 1976. The Save the Coaster Committee formed in 1978 and worked diligently to save it. Their efforts paid off and in 1990 the iconic structure opened again. Generations of kids and adults have enjoyed millions of rides on the wooden thrill ride--since July 1, 1975. In a world full of huge metal roller coasters, it’s a relic from the past—but is still a very fun ride. More vintage Belmont Park/Giant Dipper • The rise, fall and rise again of the Giant...
