Sam Pluta ’01 came to Santa Clara University as a computer science major and left a composer, but he never left coding behind. Through an interdisciplinary education at Santa Clara, Pluta joined his two passions and carved out his own path as a sound artist. “One of the beauties of a humanistic education is to be able to not only study lots of different things, but then to take all those different things and fold them into the thing that you end up focusing on,” Pluta says. “I ended up focusing on music, but my music really comes out of my computer science and math background.” Today, the Guggenheim fellow and professor at the Peabody Institute performs alongside live instrumentalists, using technology to manipulate sounds in real time to create a vibrant sonic universe. “What I'm trying to do is create a reactive environment between me and my computer and acoustic instrumentalists,” Pluta says. “The awesome thing about making your own instruments, especially in code, is that there are just so many things you can do. There are so many different combinations.” ---- Subscribe to Santa Clara University’s YouTube channel ►► https://go.scu.edu/YouTube-subscribe Follow SCU on social media: Facebook: / santaclarauniversity Instagram: / santaclarauniversity Twitter: / santaclarauniv LinkedIn: / santa-clara-university TikTok: / santaclarauniv
