Space and proportion. Plan and elevation. It was these essential architectural ideas and two fundamental ways of drawing them that composer Caroline Shaw ruminated on in 2014, back when she was commissioned to write music inspired by Dumbarton Oaks. The beautiful grounds of this country-house estate in Washington D.C. are a layered and geometric landscape of pathways, trimmed vegetation, formal gardens and striking trees.
