In addition to the feet system and outer shell, considering other important gear items such as gloves, poles, hats, and lights is critical to ensure safety, comfort, and performance during races. Gloves systems need to have a combination of warmth, waterproofness, and dexterity to keep hands protected from cold and wet conditions, yet allow the use of fingers for tasks like handling gear and food. Another essential gear item - is poles. Poles can provide stability, and support, and help navigate steep ascents and descents during the race. I use LEKI Carbon Poles for my races, which are made of lightweight carbon material, have a comfortable grip, and feature a folding design for easy packing. However, I recommend trying and considering different poles, including their weight, material, grip, and adjustability, to find the best ones for you. You will also need a hat that provides good coverage and warmth yet is breathable and fits comfortably under the outer shell. And for lights, you will need a model which is lightweight, bright, and have a long battery life for the dark hours of the race. I use a Petzl @PetzlSportVideos Nao+ system with multiple batteries, as after trying different models, of different brands, this is the one that works best for me.
