Inside a Real Nursing Simulation Lab Demonstration

During a nursing simulation lab demonstration, Direct Entry MSN students take the skills they have learned online and in skills lab and apply them to how they would work in a clinical situation. “Your clinical instructor gives you a sim lab scenario, then you go in and interact with a manikin but you have someone behind the scenes guiding the scene so it allows you to practice situations that you’re not prepared for,” says Shelby, a Direct Entry MSN student. In this video, Shelby and her clinical professor, Tobin Tito, perform a nursing simulation lab demonstration. The sim lab scenario was a patient who has undiagnosed stridor, a high-pitched wheezing sound caused by disruptive airflow. “We showed the student, Shelby, how to assess a patient’s lungs properly,” says Tobin Tito. “First had to assess and listen to the strider sounds and provide a lung assessment. She said it was stridor, which was correct, and what her response would be if you reacted to that.” Nursing simulation lab demonstrations, like the one in this video, allow students to gain diverse opportunities in a safe and supportive environment that allow them to learn effectively. Sim lab scenarios can include everything from infants to older adults, to a veteran scenario, to dealing older people and dealing with families and more complex situations. “My role is to educate students and prepare them for the real world,” says Tobin. “From how to actually treat a patient, to how to do certain skills like starting an IV giving medications - that’s what we learn in nursing simulation labs.
