On November of 1904, while he was at the town of Saint Félix, Haute-Garonne, Déodat de Séverac (1872-1921) wrote the following letter to Ricardo Viñes: “My dear friend, here I attach the last piece from my suite, that I am renaming, if you don’t see any inconvenient. «Loin des Villes (Far from the cities)» seemed much too general, and I was trying to give my music the special color from our south (here of course referring to the “Midi”, or Southern France). Therefore, it will henceforth be called «Occitanie» or «En Languedoc». I am hoping that you received the first piece. You should now have the whole suite from 1 to 5. I want to thank you for wanting to perform this small work to which you will give the verve that it perhaps lacks a bit now, sadly. I would like to offer my respects to your mother… I am still in the countryside for some time and I am taking advantage of that in order to elaborate a symphonic poem whose subject amuses me. Let me hear from you soon.” Séverac started working on this suite in 1903, and finished it in 1904. Ricardo Viñes would then perform all five pieces at the Schola Cantorum of Paris on May 25th, 1905, a year after its completion. The critique was praising: in his feuilleton in the newspaper «Le Temps», Pierre Lalo wrote: “his work comes out of nature, it is filled with the smell of the land, one can breathe in the perfume of the soil. The events below the sun, the halts in the shade, the discrete leaves tinkling in the air of the evening, the hours of rest and fantasy at the end of the day, the field laborers, the leisure after work, the pain and joy of the rustic life… His music expresses all these things: the soul of the landscapes and that of men, the soul of the motherland is within it”. Claude Debussy also wrote: “Séverac makes music that smells good and one can wholeheartedly breathe”. Original article (in French) by Anne-Charlotte Rémond: https://www.francemusique.fr/emission...
