(7 Jan 2020) FOR CLEAN VERSION SEE STORY NUMBER: apus129023 The futuristic technology on display at CES gadget show might seem years away, but it's already becoming part of our lives. Facial recognition and artificial intelligence technology look set to enter Las Vegas' famed casinos in the coming years. Las Vegas-based Konami Gaming, Inc. is developing facial recognition technology for casinos, such as this Biometric Welcome Console, which does away with the need for a member's identification card, for instance. Guests just approach the device and within seconds the system greets them by name and logs them in. "As an industry, our industry is evolving and as technology evolves, we're evolving as well," said Komani Executive Vice President Thomas Jingoli. "So anytime new things like facial recognition can be introduced, it's an exciting time for us to try and bring those into our equipment and into our industry," he said. Konami's SYNK Vision technology has also been integrated into slot machines to connect a guest's activity to their loyalty account, for instance. When players sit down at the machine, the system instantly recognises them and displays a welcome message. Their activity on the machine is then linked to their loyalty account. Of course, some are wary of the dangers of biometric technology like facial recognition and the data it generates, particularly due to how it's used to surveil populations in some countries. Jingoli says there always needs to be a way for guests to opt out. CES, formerly known as the Consumer Electronics Show, opens Tuesday January 7 through to Friday January 10, 2020.
