I breed my own chickens. Breeding chickens is a very enjoyable hobby although it is quite a bit of work and takes years to see results. I keep my flock in a free range system all the time, which gives me a few extra challenges when managing a breeding program. I keep a closed flock, which means that I don't bring in any birds from outside my property, except as hatching eggs. This helps to reduce the risk of diseases entering my flock from outside sources. I am trying to create my own type of chicken, one that is well suited to my climate and the way I keep my flock. One of the major things I am selecting for when I make my choices of breeding partners is egg quality. A good quality egg, with a strong shell, makes a strong healthy chick, as well as being a very good egg to eat! In this video I go over how I achieve breeding in a free-range setting, where all my chickens live together all the time. I share my breeding goals and how well I am doing in reaching them. Find out how I use a system of different roosters to keep inbreeding out and genetic diversity up, why I hatch with only broody hens, and what features I'm looking for in my flock superstars. 00:00 - Introduction 01:26 - Why I Breed Chickens 04:23 - My Chicken Breeding System 09:29 - My Chicken Breeding Goals 11:32 - Where Am I At?
