Sanders) and Jason (Dash Mihok), drills for ice-core samples in the Larsen Ice Shelf, which unexpectedly splits away. At a UN conference in New Delhi, Jack presents research warning that climate change could trigger a new ice age, but U.S. Vice President Raymond Becker (Kenneth Welsh) dismisses his concerns. Professor Terry Rapson (Ian Holm), an oceanographer in Scotland, supports Jack’s theory after observing rapid temperature drops in the North Atlantic. Tokyo is hit by a giant hailstorm, and astronauts on the International Space Station spot massive superstorms forming over Canada, Europe, and Siberia. Rapson’s team confirms Jack's fears: the climate shift is happening far faster than predicted. A tornado outbreak devastates Los Angeles, and three helicopters crash after entering a superstorm's eye during a mission to rescue the British royal family. Jack’s and Rapson’s teams, along with NASA meteorologist Janet Tokada (Tamlyn Tomita), create a model predicting the catastrophe will fully unfold within days. Rapson informs Jack that air drawn from the upper troposphere freezes everything in the eye of the storms, causing the helicopter crash. In New York City, Jack's son Sam (Jake Gyllenhaal) and his friends Brian (Arjay Smith) and Laura (Emmy Rossum) attend an academic decathlon, where they meet J.D. (Austin Nichols). After a powerful storm floods Manhattan, they take shelter in the New York Public Library. Laura is injured rescuing tourists from a cab. Sam contacts Jack and his mother Lucy (Sela Ward), a pediatrician, through a working payphone. Jack warns Sam to stay inside and promises to rescue him. Rapson and his team perish in the European storm. Lucy remains at her hospital to care for patients until authorities arrive. President Blake (Perry King) orders mass evacuations to Mexico. Jack, Jason, and Frank journey north; Frank sacrifices himself to save the others. Despite Sam’s warnings, many survivors leave the library once the floodwater freezes. In Mexico, Becker learns President Blake died in the storm. Laura develops sepsis, and Sam, Brian, and J.D. search a Russian cargo ship that drifted into the city for penicillin, encountering wolves that escaped from Central Park Zoo. They fend off the wolves and return to the library as the eye of the storm flash-freezes the city. Jack and Jason find shelter in an abandoned restaurant. After the superstorms pass, Jack and Jason reach the library and find Sam’s group alive. Jack radios for help. In his first address as the new president, Becker speaks from the U.S. embassy in Mexico, apologizing for ignoring the warnings and dispatching helicopters to rescue survivors. From the ISS, astronauts gaze down at the frozen Northern Hemisphere, noting the air has never looked so clear. #thedayaftertomorrow #jakegyllenhaal #emmyrossum
