Artis Wodehouse is bringing her 1916 Estey Artist Model Z reed organ -- purchased in 2000 and in storage since 2008 -- back to playability. Her husband, Edmund Wodehouse decided to investigate and learn about the mechanical geography of the instrument in order to meet this goal. The video details his approach to safely removing and cleaning the ca. 400 reeds of this complex instrument. He has discovered how the instrument operates, and how adjustments can be made. For instance, this means insuring that the reeds are properly sounding and triggered by the stop pulls, and that all the mechanical devices such as the swell shades, octave couplers and the gran jeu function as originally intended. Once these are attended to, he plans to address the issue of improving some of the tuning. Estey's Artist Model Z was one of the finest models built by the Estey Company of Brattleboro, VT. The instrument was designed to have a beautiful, intimate sound and features a variety of different ranks of reeds that offer the player a rich tonal palate from which to choose for expressive performance.
