Establishing and managing a farm is a big job as it is, and as any parent knows, raising a family is no less so. Both bring constant change and evolution and guide your life in unpredictable ways. Hear from Mike Roberts of Roots Farm about the management skills, communication and cooperation he and his wife have needed to run a successful farm business with their children along for the ride. He'll share how they've managed to stay profitable while leaving plenty of time for parenting, as well as how farmer parents can and should tailor their approaches to their own lives. Mike is a mechanical engineer-turned-farmer. He and his (also engineer) wife Kelli learned how much they liked farming after spending a year working on an organic farm between graduate school and the professional world. After returning to the field of engineering, they continued to feel a pull towards farming and started making plans for their own farm. For the first few years after founding the farm in 2009, they each held offsite jobs. After pouring their hearts and souls into starting Roots Farm, they are now both able to focus on the farm full-time, in addition to raising their family (a ten-year-old and a seven-year-old).
