Kewaunee Lighthouse Fog Signals

Hear the fog signals used in Kewaunee's lighthouse! Our VP Jake visited a friend, who owns a collection of steam whistles and an old foghorn of the same size used in Kewaunee! Jake has learned a lot about the diaphone fog horn in recent months, much of it from Harry. The old lighthouse on the north pier received a steam fog whistle in 1905. That whistle was used until 1912, when the current building was built on the south pier. That new lighthouse received a new 10" Crosby chime whistle that was blown on compressed air. The whistle consumes an incredible volume (quantity) of air - 7 massive tanks were needed in the building to hold all the air. In 1919, the whistle was replaced with a "Type F" diaphone fog horn. This horn consumes less air at a lower pressure. Ultimately, only 2 tanks remained in the lighthouse to hold air. In 1931, the detached light tower was removed and the current light tower was built out of the roof of the fog signal building. Sometime after that, a second diaphone was added for redundancy. The diaphones were sounded in foggy weather until 1981.
