Fissure cracks water pipe inside Grindavík. IMO Updated at 12:30 The total length of the eruption fissure is now about 1200 m and continues to extend southward. The Icelandic Meteorological Office received a report that a hot water pipe has broken in the northern part of Grindavík. This confirms that considerable cracking has occurred within the town. Seismic activity continues along the entire magma corridor, with the highest activity at the northeastern end of the corridor. The magma corridor now extends about 3 km further northeast than seen in previous eruptions. Deformation data also show continued northeastward movement. This suggests that magma is still moving through the magma corridor. Volcanic eruption just north of Grindavík 1.4.2025 Updated at 11:20 The fissure has extended southward. A new fissure opened a few hundred meters inside the dikes north of Grindavík - between the dikes and Grindavík. The fissure continues to extend and is now approaching the fissure that opened in the eruption in January 2024. 1.4.2025 Updated at 10:35 Initial reports from the Coast Guard's surveillance flight indicate that the crack is now about 700 meters wide and has remained fairly stable, but it cannot be ruled out that it could extend north or south. Seismic activity and deformation measurements show ongoing activity. The hazard assessment has been updated, with the hazard level increased in the Sundhnúk crater range (Area 3) to very high hazard (purple) and in Grindavík (Area 4) from high hazard (red) to very high hazard (purple). The hazard assessment is valid until 2 April at 10:30, with all other conditions unchanged. Updated at 10:00 AM The crack is now about 500 meters wide and has now reached through the dam north of Grindavík. The crack continues to grow and it cannot be ruled out that it will continue to open to the south. We are still waiting for news from the Coast Guard helicopter. They are just pretty pictures that AI is producing when a text describes a volcanic event or geological phenomenon for them. They are by no means represent the reality and are used here only for their graphical merits. Icelandic Meteorological Office is a great source of information and maps: https://www.vedur.is/um-vi/frettir/kv... The team that designed the dikes at Grindavík and Svartsengi gained a lot of experience in designing and making them when experiments were carried out with dikes during the eruption at Fagradalsfjall in 2021. It was not surprising to the team when the dikes passed the test in the eruption on January 14. Hörn Hrafnsdóttir, water resources engineer at Verkís and assistant professor at the Department of Environmental and Civil Engineering at the University of Helsinki, and Sólveig Kristín Sigurðardóttir, geotechnical engineer at Verkís, are on the dam team.
