The Celo Knob landslide in Yancey County, North Carolina took place during Hurricane Helene on September 27th, 2024. Celo Knob is the northernmost major peak in North Carolina's Black Mountains, with an elevation of about 6,319 feet. It is part of the Pisgah National Forest. Historically, the area was used for mining mica and was a popular recreation spot until an outlaw, D. W. Lockhart, reportedly used it as a hiding place, leading to a decline in public use. Footage from October 1st, 2025. These mountains are among the oldest in the world, with initial formation starting over a billion years ago. They were shaped by ancient continental collisions, when the land was pushed upwards, and parts of the range were once at the bottom of the ocean. The mountains appear blue at times from a distance because trees release a chemical called isoprene into the atmosphere, creating a hazy blue tint.
