It's been a while since I last made a full Bush Treks video, partly due to it being the dry season and partly being busy with some consulting and other works. However, the weather is warming and the earliest flowers are now throwing up their flowers for the early spring insects to visit. The landscape is still very dry and the rains are still some months away but there's things to see out and about across the woodlands. One of the more elusive and interesting groups I'm after are the early flowering Eulophia orchid species, many of which are widely spread and usually dull coloured, making them usually more difficult to find. A colleague of mine is wanting to do phylogenetic work on these interesting little orchids and so I'm out looking to collect flowers and DNA material to help his analysis. Along the way there's also some other early spring flowering perennials to stop and enjoy so join me as I have a pleasant walk through some lovely Miombo woodland as I search for what's in bloom! Video breakdown: 00:00 Intro 01:02 Eulophia katangensis (Orchidaceae) 02:50 Aeschynomene bracteosa var. bracteosa (Fabaceae - Papilionoindeae) 04:07 Vigna pygmaea (Fabaceae - Papilionoideae) 04:58 Vigna or Sphenostylis (Fabaceae - Papilionoideae) 05:48 Vigna antunesii (Fabaceae - Papilionoideae) 06:55 Eulophia parvula (Orchidaceae) 08:10 Ochna leptoclada (Ochnaceae) 09:31 Hibiscus rhodanthus (Malvaceae - Malvoideae) 10:46 Eulophia callichroma (Orchidaceae) 12:05 Woodland view 12:19 Outro As always, if you want to learn more about any of the plants mentioned in this video, please check out the Flora of Zambia website (https://zambiaflora.com) to find more pictures and descriptions; however, please note that not all plants will have pictures and descriptions as we are slowly working to upload more content all the time. Also, please don't hesitate to leave us a comment on the video or any of the plants we've talked about. Cheers and thanks for watching!
