Wide of protest STORYLINE: Tens of thousands of people in Istanbul protested on Sunday against Pope Benedict XVI's upcoming visit to the predominantly Muslim country. Police said some 25-thousand people joined the demonstration, the largest protest held so far against the pope's visit, ahead of his arrival on Tuesday. Some four thousand officers backed by riot trucks, armoured vehicles and helicopters monitored the protest. The protest was organised by a pro-Islamic political party called 'Felicity' whose leaders have said they were offended by Benedict's comments in September linking violence and Islam. In a September 12 speech in his native Germany, Benedict sparked rage across the Muslim world by quoting a medieval Byzantine emperor's words linking Islam to violence. Benedict, who is making his first trip as pope to a predominantly Muslim country, has said he regretted that his speech caused offence and has stressed that the quotes did not reflect his personal opinion. "Everybody is talking about dialogue between the religions, but this pope insulted our prophet, that's why we protest, that's why we don't want him to come," a protester at the protest said. Officially, Turkey is a rigidly secular republic, though around 99 percent of its population is Muslim. Benedict has few fans in Turkey, which is hoping to become the first predominantly Muslim member of the European Union. He previously spoken out against Turkey's EU bid, and has called for a return to fundamental Christian values in Europe. The pope is scheduled to stay four days in Turkey. He will meet the Istanbul-based leader of the world's 300 (m)million Orthodox Christians, Patriarch Bartholomew I.
