Highlights from our resounding 4-1 victory over Northallerton Town at the Calvert Stadium in the Emirates FA Cup 1st Preliminary Qualifying Round on Tuesday 1st September 2020. Match Report by Graham Hutchinson: NORTHALLERTON TOWN (0) 1 Stephenson 90 pen. BILLINGHAM TOWN (3) 4 Baltazar 8, 65 Earl 29 Lavan 42 Baltazar is a famous name - there was once a king who came baring gifts. On Tuesday night Gee Baltazar was the King of Northallerton as he happily accepted the fans adulation after a performance of leadership. It’s hard to imagine that this time last year, Baltazar was plying his trade at Whitley Bay as a full-back! Maybe he was there the night Town destroyed Whitley Bay 3-0 and witnessed the frightening speed of Elliott Beddow on the right wing because here, Baltazar was so quick there was comparisons made with former Manchester United star Wilfred Zaha. And ultimately it was Billingham’s stunning speed that caught Northallerton cold. The hosts simply couldn’t cope with Baltazar on the right and Alex Bruton on the left as Town coasted into the next round of the FA Cup. Northallerton came into the tie off the back of some disappointing pre-season results and they virtually brought that form into this game. At the end, manager Darren Trotter looked forlorn as he trudged down the tunnel; his side will have better days but even at this early stage, they look like they could be in for a long arduous campaign. Town will now wait to see who come out as victors on Wednesday night when Stockton Town entertain Shildon in arguably the tie of the round. The opening ten minutes provided some pulsating action at both ends. Baltazar was the architect of Towns first foray on goal when his pace brought out a foul twenty five yards out - Chris Dickinson with a strike that was only inches from the top right hand corner. And Towns early pressure told as they took a deserved lead on eight minutes - Danny Earls flicked on header finding BALTAZAR in space, who beat Tom Dawson with a delicate finish. Town’s lead should have been extended a minute later when Bruton released Baltazar but this time Dawson won the one-on-one duel. However both defences did look nervous in the early exchanges and after an almighty melee, Nathaniel Skidmore rattled the upright and when the second phase of play fell to Micky Rae, the striker also somehow managed to replicate Skidmore by striking the same upright. After that early scare, Billingham soon nullified any threat by dominating the midfield battles, particularly Ash Lavan and aided by the amiable Danny Boyle. That meant the likes of Baltazar, Dickinson, Earl & Bruton were able to link up play and Bruton was unfortunate to see his strike off target. The second goal finally came on twenty five minutes - Lavan’s driven shot was blocked and the ball fell kindly to EARL who found the bottom right hand corner. And three minutes before half time, LAVAN rounded off a superb first half display by shrugging off a foul (well done to referee Steve Lawson who allowed the advantage) and rolled the ball past Dawson. HT NORTHALLERTON 0 BILLINGHAM TOWN 3 The tie was effectively over when Bruton limped off to be replaced by Cameron Holliday who had recently signed from Durham City. Holliday was soon in the action - seeing his near post effort saved by Dawson. But Dawson couldn’t do anything about BALTAZAR second and Towns fourth goal when the mercurial magician coolly found the top right hand corner; that one was a gift to the travelling supporters. Northallerton only figured inside the final twenty minutes. Lewis Mcdonald kept out Andrew Shepherds low drive and the keeper did well to deny Skidmore from a corner. The Yorkshiremen did gain a consolation from the penalty spot after John Howard was upended by Leon Carling - Nathan Stephenson sending Mcdonald the wrong way. The last word has to go to Baltazar - Gee Whizz that was some display or should it be Gee Wizard instead of king? Either way, his box of tricks or gifts will surely entertain fans in the coming weeks.
