Coach Alicia: We’re going to take this opportunity for Schuyler to talk about our new Certified Professional Compliance Officer (CPCO™) Course that just launched that he is the instructor and the coach for. It is so exciting. I just want to say real quick before he talks about it, that even if you’re not going to sit for the compliance credential, take the course because every single credential that the AAPC offers or AHIMA offers it will have a huge component of compliance in it. So it will be beneficial to you. Also, if you need extra CEUs and your employer is willing to pay for it, we used to say, “Hey, take the MTA (medical terminology & anatomy) course.” Everybody needs a shot in the arm with that. Often, because it’s related to your position, your employer might be willing to pay for that course for you to get CEUs, it’s like 40 CEUs for the MTA course. Plus our MTA course is geared for coders not clinicians, so that’s a bonus. Now that we have the compliance course, I would say the compliance… mind you, the MTA course is awesome. Don’t get me wrong, I love it, but the compliance course will blow it away and they’re comparable in price. Maybe your employer will pay for twice for two. Sometimes every two years that your employer will pay, you never know until you ask. They may tell you “no,” but I can tell you if you’re a coder it’s a tax write off. Now, let’s hear from Schuyler a little bit about the course itself. Coach Schuyler: Yes. The important thing to note is that compliance is not just something for leadership and management, but rather everybody’s responsibility. That is why it’s important to understand your role in compliance. A lot of these governmental agencies such as OIG, CMS, now can come up to individual’s for cival monetary penalties versus something that we discussed in that training course. So, with some of these certification exams, unfortunately they really just touch the bare minimum on compliance especially the CPC exam, I believe it’s like five exam questions if I remember correctly. Coach Alicia: No. There’s eight. Coach Schuyler: Eight, OK. Coach Alicia: I could be wrong. We’re thinking the one that had five was HCPCS. I could be wrong. Coach Schuyler: OK. I think that’s about it. There’s not many, and that’s an unfortunate thing, it was comparable to the CPMA or obviously the CPCO exam. But the CPMA exam does have a lot more compliance or related questions on that exam rather than the others, so it’s important that you understand where you are and how you are able to enforce that within your organization as most unfortunately do not have a set compliance program which as of 2014 with the enforcement and institution of the Affordable Care Act, it is now required that organizations have a set compliance program. Beforehand it was only recommended and voluntary for organizations to have a compliance program. Within this course, you touch base on a lot of different health laws, so HIPAA, the False Claims Act. In the False Claims Act we share about cases nowadays regarding the whistleblower action, so that is where individuals can come forth and present a case towards the government that, for example, if they’re working for a specific employer and they spoke with the supervisors and directors regarding the practices that they have and they are not willing to change it and there is evidence that they are in the wrong and there are ways that you were able to submit that to the government and they were able to either accept the case and they will do the investigation or they will not accept the case and then you can either decide whether you will go on with it or just end it. But if you do, there are certain rewards or settlements for these individuals for the whistleblower act. If you are a whistleblower and the government does take place in this case, you’re able to receive a settlement between 15% and 25% of the overall settlement of the whole case. If the government does not take place in this investigation, then you are entitled the 25% to 30% of that settlement.
