Regular cleaning and maintenance are essential to keep your firearm functioning properly and to extend its lifespan. This guide will walk you through the steps to effectively clean your Springfield Armory XDM Elite. Step-by-Step Cleaning Process 1. Ensure Safety Check for Ammunition: Make sure the handgun is unloaded. Remove the magazine and visually inspect the chamber to confirm it is empty. Engage the Safety: Engage the manual safety and keep the firearm pointed in a safe direction during the cleaning process. 2. Disassemble the Handgun Remove the Magazine: Press the magazine release button to detach the magazine from the grip. Check the Chamber: Confirm again that the chamber is empty. Field Strip the XDM Elite: Pull the slide back slightly and lock it in the open position using the slide stop lever. Rotate the takedown lever down (toward the 6 o’clock position) while maintaining the slide in the locked position. Release the slide to the forward position. Pull the trigger to release the slide completely from the frame. Remove the recoil spring and guide rod by pulling it out from the slide. Tilt the barrel upward and remove it from the slide. 3. Clean the Barrel Use a Cleaning Rod: Attach a patch soaked in gun cleaning solvent to a cleaning jag and run it through the barrel from the chamber to the muzzle. Scrub the Bore: Use a bronze or nylon brush on the cleaning rod to scrub the inside of the barrel, focusing on areas with carbon buildup and residue. Dry the Barrel: Run clean, dry patches through the barrel until they come out clean. Oil the Bore: Apply a light coat of gun oil to a clean patch and run it through the barrel for protection against corrosion. 4. Clean the Slide and Frame Use a Brush and Solvent: Dip a toothbrush or cleaning brush into gun cleaning solvent and scrub the inside of the slide and frame, focusing on areas where fouling accumulates. Wipe Down Surfaces: Use rags or paper towels to wipe down the inside of the slide and frame, removing dirt and debris. Clean the Firing Pin: Use a brush or patch soaked in solvent to clean around the firing pin, ensuring it is free of fouling. 5. Clean the Recoil Spring and Guide Rod Wipe Down: Use a cloth or paper towel to clean the recoil spring and guide rod, removing any residue. 6. Clean the Exterior Wipe Down the Grip and Frame: Use a cloth or paper towel dampened with solvent to wipe down the grip and frame of the handgun, removing fingerprints and dirt. Inspect for Damage: Check for any signs of wear, cracks, or damage that may require attention. 7. Reassemble the Handgun Insert the Barrel: Place the barrel back into the slide, tilting it slightly downward to secure it in place. Reinsert the Recoil Spring and Guide Rod: Position the recoil spring and guide rod back into the slide. Attach the Slide to the Frame: Align the slide with the frame and carefully slide it back into place until it locks securely. 8. Final Lubrication and Inspection Apply Lubrication: Use a small amount of gun oil on a clean patch or cloth to lubricate the moving parts, such as the slide rails and locking lugs. Wipe Down the Exterior: Use a soft cloth to wipe down the exterior surfaces of the handgun to remove any fingerprints or excess oil. 9. Store Properly Final Inspection: Check to ensure everything is properly reassembled and functioning correctly. Store in a Safe Place: Place the handgun in a secure and dry location, preferably in a gun safe, to protect it from damage. Additional Tips Frequency of Cleaning: Clean your XDM Elite after each use or at least every few months, depending on how often you shoot. Avoid Over-lubrication: Excess oil can attract dirt and debris, so use it sparingly. Subscribe to the Skull Crush Inc channel for more gun cleaning tutorial videos.
