Philip and Hilali celebrate their renewal of vows in Georgetown, California. You might want to keep your finger on the volume control. Philip, Hilali and Philip's son, Josh, sat down together to discuss plans for a Celebration of Life party after Philip died. Philip had been diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma, but he said, "I don't want a party for me after I die. I want to be there to enjoy a fun event with my friends and relatives." Hilali likes to call it our, "Renewal of Vowels" party (i.e., a, e, i, o, u OR e-i-e-i-o). Who is Hilali? In 2007, as our flight lifted out of LAX, I made the simple statement to Philip that I didn't want to be called Sarah anymore. There were just too many Sarahs around. We were on our way to Tanzania, to climb Kilimanjaro and experience the Serengeti on Safari. We walked through the Usambara Mountains visiting the villages and interacting with the locals with our well-informed and spoken guide, Said (pronounce all letters). Our last adventure on this trip was to the Spice Island of Zanzibar, quite delightful. At the end of our visit, a young tour guide presented himself and what adventures he could offer us. In the dimly lit alley he presented his business card. His name appeared clearly, like there was a spot light on it. "Hilali" I read out loud. "That's right" he said. "It's beautiful" I responded. "It means New Moon," he said. And so I adopted my name Hilali. My 1st 18 years I was Betsy Jean Ramsay. At age 18, I had to get security clearance for a job at a data processing business. Thus, Sarah Elizabeth Jean Ramsay became my legal handle for the next 45 years. And now my most fun and-self chosen name is Hilali. Hugs & Love, Hilali Hilali is also known as "The Vegetable Queen". She is widely known for sharing arugula and other treasures from her garden.
