Extremely low visibility, high winds, and heavy snow made for dangerous driving conditions. With the interstate closure, many truckers were forced to pull off at local truck stops to wait out the weather. The high winds created massive snow drifts, covering vehicles, driveways, and even snowing in the front doors of some area homes. Several vehicles slid off I-90 between Box Elder and Rapid City, getting stuck in the deep snowy ditches. Snow plow drivers were out in force, though the high winds made keeping up with the accumulating snow difficult to impossible.
