On her new record "For Melancholy Brunettes (& sad women) [an album totally made for the IQMB fellas], Zauner takes more creative swings by way of lush instrumentation and whimsical vibes, like a watching a fairy float over your shoulder for 32 minutes straight. Japanese Breakfast dive head first into the country fad on a few songs here like "Men in Bars" and "Mega Circuit", but not in a trendy way, which makes for better songwriting and instrumentation. The only downside is that the bangers are few & far between, with more emphasis on slow, airy songs that are pretty, but can kind of take the wind out of your sails.
