North Korean leader Kim Jong Un drives rocket launcher vehicle

North Korea staged a display of multiple rocket launchers outside the venue of the landmark congress of its ruling Workers' Party, and leader Kim Jong Un took one for a spin, reported state media. The event took place on Wednesday (Feb 18), state broadcaster KRT reported early Thursday. Kim said that the ninth congress of the Workers' Party "will make clear the next-stage plan and goal for strengthening the self-reliant defence capabilities," in a speech at the rocket launcher event, the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) reported. Video from KRT shows Kim standing by one of the rocket launcher vehicles, which is then shown driving around the congress venue, with what appears to be Kim getting out of the cabin. On the same day, Kim broke ground at a new section of housing construction, in a suburb of Pyongyang. KRT video showed Kim shovelling earth for a moment with other officials, and then pushing a button for explosions that threw earth high into the air.
