For the last of the two videos from Stockwell open day, it was time to finish off with a truely spectacular and unique vehicle, that being London's V3. V3 was new to London Transport in 1984 as part of the AVE (Alternative Vehicle Evaluation) trials, where LT accquired a small mix of different types to see how well they would operate in the Capital, to avoid ordering large batches of vehicles and then discovering the problems afterwards. The AVE vehicles include 3 H-class Dennis Dominators, 3 L-class Leyland Olympians, 2 Mk 2 MCW Metrobuses M1441 & M1442 and 3 V-class Volvo Ailsas. Whilst V1 & V2 were normal standard fare vehicles; V3 was uniquely built with the rear door built behind the rear axle and with a twin staircase layout, which neccessitated a conductor instead it being a OPO bus. V3 was put into service at Stockwell garage, along with the rest of the AVE vehicles, where it worked on routes 77A & 88. By 1986 it was transferred to Potters Bar where the rear door was removed, allowing it to work a plethora of routes. Tragedy struck in 1992 when working a dead run in the Enfield area, it rolled off the road and collided with a tree, leaving it in a very sorry state. The vehicle passed to Leeds independant Black Prince of Morley where it spent 12 years being painstakingly restored to roadworthy condition, and from 2004 to 2005 it was used in service by the company. 2006 saw the vehicle purchased by Roger Wright, who reinstated the rear door and returned it to London red. After participating at the Stockwell event, this video was taken on the return journey to its home. V3 is powered by a front mounted Volvo TD70H turbocharged engine coupled to a 5-speed pneumocyclic semi-automatic gearbox (V1 & V2 had Voith D851 3-speed autos). Being fantasticly driven by a good friend of mine, Keith Valla. Enjoy the might of the Ailsa! Start: Stepney Green Station Finish: Hollybush Hill, junction with Snaresbrook High Street
