We had the privilege of visiting Victor Murei, a 28-year-old coffee farmer in Trans Nzoia County and the visionary behind Barry’s Coffee Estate. After graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in IT, Victor chose a different path, coffee farming. His family once grew maize, but after seeing the strong returns in coffee, they made the bold shift. Since inception, Victor has milled and marketed his coffee with New KPCU PLC, building a partnership rooted in trust and transparency. Through New KPCU’s subsidised farm inputs programme and the Coffee Cherry Advance Revolving Fund, Victor has strengthened his production and cash flow, enabling him to grow with confidence. At Barry’s Coffee Estate, it’s truly seed to cup. He runs a well-established nursery propagating Kenya’s five key varieties; SL28, SL34, Ruiru 11, Batian, and K7, and is now experimenting with the prestigious Geisha variety. Innovation is at the heart of his farm: • Solar dryers to reduce labour • Biochar to improve soil nutrition and drought resilience • A clonal garden producing zygotes for quality seedlings • A fully equipped coffee lab for roasting, grinding, and packaging Victor also mentors and works alongside other young farmers in the region, proving that agriculture is no longer “primitive,” but a modern, innovative, and profitable enterprise. At New KPCU, we are proud to support youth in coffee, championing it as a viable, sustainable path to self-employment and wealth creation. The future of coffee is young. And it’s already brewing.
