Salut Printemts is the first of three compositions by Claude Debussy inspired by the spring theme. It was written in 1882 when he was nineteen years old, and participating in the Prix de Rome competition. For the competition Debussy stayed in a room without piano for six days and was expected to write a fugue and a work for chorus and orchestra, based on the sonnet by Anatole de Séguir (1823-1902). The result was Salut Printemps for three-part female chorus, soprano solo, and orchestra. The piece was published only after Debussy died in a version for chorus and piano reduction in 1928, ad for orchestra and chorus in 1956.
