The Calakmul Mayan Ruins are a significant archaeological site located in the Mexican state of Campeche, within the jungles of the greater Petén Basin region. Calakmul was an ancient Maya city that played a major role in the region. It's estimated to have had a population of around 50,000 people at its peak. The city was the capital of a large regional state known as the Kingdom of the Snake, which included around 20 secondary cities. The ruins and the surrounding jungle were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2002. It's remote location means it receives fewer visitors compared to other Mayan sites, offering a more untouched and authentic experience. One of the largest structures at Calakmul is the great pyramid, Structure 2, which is over 45 meters high. Visiting Calakmul provides a unique opportunity to explore one of the most powerful ancient cities of the Maya lowlands, enveloped by the dense jungle that adds to its mystique and allure.
