Kicking off Black Music Appreciation Month at the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles, the June 8, 2023 screening of pioneering musician and Debut Film Director Kenny Vance’s award-winning feature documentary film was not just amazing entertainment music and storytelling of the undersung Doo- Wop era -- it cemented its place as a brick in the bridge of music history for the ages. What unfolded was a motherlode of untold stories, presented by cultural experts in the stunning setting of the GRAMMY Museum. Nationally recognized brand architect, TV personality, and author Ericka Pittman emceed the event, including the announcement of a historic endorsement by Nolen Bivens, the CEO of Americans for the Arts: “Americans for the Arts supports Heart & Soul: A Love Story and its mission of preserving these important stories of early rock ‘n roll history. Preserving and telling the stories of these artists, especially those that aren’t widely known, is so important to our understanding of how our music evolved to where it is today. I commend Kenny Vance and his mission to shine a light on these musicians and their place in American music history.” An opening monologue by hip-hop icon Christopher “Kid” Reid then set the tone, putting the film in context and connecting the musical dots, performing his original poem, “From Doo Wop to Hip Hop.” Reid’s poem “defined the film’s core messages: inclusivity and social change.” * Writer/producer/Editor Brande Victorian moderated a closing Q&A with Director Kenny Vance, whose perspective spans over half a century of experience from co-founder of the hit Sixties group Jay & the Americans to Music Director of Saturday Night Live, music supervision of films including Animal House, American Hot Wax, and seminal work with Steely Dan.
