CHRONICLES OF A NOT YET CHAMPION GOLFER #42 | THE SHORT SIDE ; "This is how I need to play tournament golf" Most golf courses will have greens that are designed in a way that if you miss in certain areas, you'll be struggling to get up and down and depending on what sort of mood the green keeper is in, the pin position can entice you into hitting it in these 'undesirable' areas. You know you shouldn't take it on, you know you'll likely make bogey......"ah lets go for it, well that was stupid". My genuine thought process. This sort of scenario is called missing it on the short side. You see it in major championships although the course set up often requires that you take on these areas as the alternative isn't much better, hence the usual higher than normal scores. In general, short siding can be avoided, and you can still make birdies. It's about knowing where you can miss, but more importantly about where you can't. It's important to know when to play aggressively and when to play aggressively at a conservative target, giving yourself chances to make birdie but knowing when par is a good score. If you can think clearly about this, make good decisions, it really does make the game easier...sometimes. in this video I play nine holes with the sole purpose of not short siding myself, picking the correct sections to aim for and still give myself chance for birdie. Once you've done that, it's all about execution, which isn't always spot on! Anyway, see how I get on in this challenge. Thanks for watching. See you next Tuesday!
